The Nvidia RTX 4080 Super GPU may soon run out of stock, and the simultaneous release of the RTX 5080 and 5090 could be a double whammy.
If the rumor is true, Nvidia is getting ready to stop making another high-end Lovelace graphics card in order to concentrate on releasing twice as many next-generation Blackwell GPUs.
This time it is the RTX 4080 Super, which Team Green is allegedly planning to discontinue, in line with recent speculations that this was also the case for the RTX 4090 (as well as its equivalent for the Chinese market, the RTX 4090D).
According to Wccftech, Harukaze5719 on X noticed this conjecture, which originates from the Board Channels forum in China, a consistent source of hearsay that seeps out of the hardware supply chain.
According to rumors, Nvidia’s RTX 4080 Super will only be available in limited quantities in October as production ends this month. In November, the chips that graphics card manufacturers receive will run out.
It is rumored that production of the RTX 4090 has already ended (that was in September) and that the supply of chips to board makers will run out in October, later this month. This timeline is one month ahead of what we have previously heard about.
That implies that although stock will start to run out, some graphics cards will still be assembled by manufacturers and show up after those (rumored) final chip supply dates.
This paves the way for the launch of the RTX 5080 and 5090, and based on this rumor, Nvidia plans to launch the next generation of Blackwell GPUs in two stages. It is anticipated that the RTX 5080 and 5090 will be released concurrently, in contrast to earlier rumors suggesting that there might be a very slight delay.
Analysis: Keep watching those stock levels
Add a whole lot of seasoning here, of course, because all of this is merely chatter from the supply chain. Still, the rumor regarding Nvidia winding up the production of the RTX 4090 does appear to have some truth behind it, or at least the picture of stock levels and pricing for the Lovelace flagship suggests that possibility.
We have noticed that the RTX 4090 is starting to run low on inventory in some cases in Europe and the US, and pricing is unquestionably skyrocketing (it is currently 10% or slightly more over MSRP in the US—increases have been much more than that in Europe). That fits with the theory that Nvidia stopped producing chips, meaning that the RTX 4090’s final chips are probably shipping right now and may not be for much longer.
The RTX 4080 Super should theoretically follow, but as of yet, there has not been any change in this GPU’s pricing. For certain models at least, this graphics card is still available at its MSRP. But if this theory is correct, we should expect to witness a similar situation with the RTX 4080 Super later this month. Thus, for the time being, we should keep a careful watch on this graphics card as well as the RTX 4090, which might exhibit additional signs of low memory (or possibly going away completely).
All of this could represent fairly firm clues that the RTX 5080 and 5090 are indeed close at hand, as many are predicting, with the current consensus generally converging on a CES 2025 reveal for those GPUs. We anticipate that there will then be a somewhat spaced launch, but this rumor seems to suggest otherwise (pass the salt again).
